When God Whispers 'My Child, Listen'

There's a moment in the chaos of your day when God speaks your name — but you have to be quiet enough to hear it.

"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate."

Luke 15:20-24

There's a moment I imagine happening somewhere between your morning alarm and the hundredth notification of the day — when the noise finally pauses and you almost hear something. Not your phone. Not your to-do list. Something deeper.

That's the moment I want to talk about today.

We live in a world that never stops talking. We scroll through feeds designed to keep us engaged, we answer emails that demand immediate attention, we carry conversations in our heads long after they've ended. And somewhere in the middle of all that noise, God is speaking. He's not shouting. He's not demanding our attention. He's simply calling out in that still, quiet voice — the one we have to actually stop to hear.

And when He speaks, He doesn't call us by our degrees or our failures. He doesn't call us by our achievements or our mistakes. He calls us what He has always called us: His child.

In the familiar story of the prodigal son, there's a moment that often gets skipped over. The younger son comes home with his rehearsed apology, ready to grovel for a place among the hired servants. But the father sees him from a distance. And before the son can even finish his speech, the father runs to him, embraces him, and calls for a celebration. Not because the son earned it. Not because he deserved it. But because a child had come home.

That's how God responds to us. Not with a ledger. With open arms.

But here's what I didn't have room to tell you — the older brother standing in the field reveals something about all of us. If that image stirred something in you, sit with this video for a few minutes.

You are loved. You are seen. And God is still calling your name.

A prayer

Father, quiet the noise around me today so I can hear Your voice. Thank You that You call me Your child — not because of what I do, but because of who You are. Help me to recognize Your call even in the ordinary moments of my day. I want to listen, Lord, not just to hear — but to respond. In Jesus' name, Amen.
