The One Year Bible ESV Review: Solid Daily Reading Plan, Limited Study Use

The One Year Bible organizes Scripture into 365 daily readings, each combining a portion of the Old Testament, New Testament, a Psalm, and a proverb. The idea is straightforward: read four passages a day, and by year-end you have consumed the whole canon. That kind of structured approach works well for people who thrive on external accountability and want a reading plan that does the planning for them.

The ESV translation sits comfortably in the more literal end of the spectrum. It preserves word choices that matter to careful readers without sacrificing readability as badly as, say, the NASB does. If you appreciate thinking about what the original authors actually said rather than hearing a paraphrase, this is a trustworthy translation.

The format is where things get interesting and, for some readers, limiting. Reading the Bible this way means you will jump around — finishing Genesis on Monday, picking it up again Wednesday after you've been through some of Numbers. The books are not in canonical order. That intentional shuffling is the whole point of the product; it keeps the Old Testament from feeling like a chore before you reach the Gospels. But it also means this Bible is poorly suited for reference work. If you want to flip to Romans 3 to look something up, you will need to search by the date you read Romans 3, not by turning to a Romans chapter heading. Traditional layout this is not.

The softcover binding keeps the price accessible and the weight manageable, which is helpful for a Bible you intend to read daily and carry with you. That said, heavy daily use will eventually test a softcover's durability. If you plan to keep this Bible for years of consecutive use, a hardcover edition may serve you better in the long run.

The four-passage daily rhythm is generous without being exhaustive. It gives you enough to feel like you are engaging Scripture meaningfully, but it will not substitute for deeper study or commentary work. Think of it as a daily feed, not a meal. Pastors, seminary students, or anyone wanting to camp out in a book of the Bible for a season will need additional resources.

The One Year Bible is best for the person who has tried and failed to read through the Bible on their own and knows they need a structured nudge. If you are already a consistent reader and want richer tools, look elsewhere. But if you need a framework and a daily appointment with Scripture, this does the job without fuss.
