God's Message About Toxic Connections: Finding Freedom
What if the bravest thing God ever asks you to do is let go?
"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
— 2 Corinthians 6:14
There's a moment — maybe you've felt it — when you realize a connection in your life has stopped feeding your soul and started draining it instead. It might be a friendship, a relationship, a family tie. The kind of bond where leaving feels impossible, but staying feels like slow erosion. If you've been praying about it, wondering if you're the problem, wrestling with guilt over wanting out — pause. God might be trying to tell you something.
Scripture doesn't tiptoe around this. In 2 Corinthians 6:14, Paul writes plainly: "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers." That word 'yoked' is physical — two animals bound together, pulling in different directions. God isn't asking you to abandon people. He's asking you to stop carrying weight he never placed on your shoulders. Jesus himself drew boundaries. He told his mother and brothers that his true family was those who followed him — not to be cruel, but to protect the mission he'd been given. Some connections pull us away from who we're becoming.
Here's what I want you to hear, though: deleting a toxic connection isn't punishment. It's stewardship. You're not rejecting a person — you're protecting the life God is building in you. And that takes courage most people won't understand.
There's a story I share in today's video I couldn't fit here — about a moment I had to make exactly this choice, and what God gave me in return. If something in your heart is stirring right now, sit with this for five minutes and watch.
May you have the strength to release what's harming you and the faith to trust what replaces it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
A prayer
Father, sometimes the bravest thing you ask us to do is let go of a connection that once felt like home. Give us the wisdom to know the difference between a relationship that refines us and one that quietly erodes our peace. When letting go feels impossible, remind us that your love is enough. In Jesus' name, Amen.
